A fresh breeze, clear air and spectacular views make mountains a true paradise for hiking. Are you also a fan of long-distance hiking trails? Here’s a checklist to make your hiking boots ready for the mountains.
1. Clean your hiking boots
- Remove the laces and the boot insoles.
- To protect the inside of your boots from bad odours, you can occasionally use MISTER MINIT’s Fresh spray.
- Scrape off the mud and the dirt with a stiff brush.
- Spray Combi Foam on the boots and scrub it all over with the Nubuck Brush.

- Wipe off the excess foam with a soft cloth and let dry naturally. Don’t force-dry your hiking boots, because that can cause the leather to dry and crack.
- To protect the inside of your boots from bad odours, you can occasionally use MISTER MINIT’s Fresh spray.
2. Protect the outside of the boots
- Apply MISTER MINIT’s Protector to protect your boots against oil and dirt and to make them waterproof. Just spray at a distance of 30 cm from the boot for a few seconds and let them dry completely.
- Alternatively you can apply MISTER MINIT Grease on oiled leather boots.

3. Check for wear and tear
- Replace worn and torn boot laces with new ones that match both the shape (round or flat) and length of your previous pair.
- Worn-out insoles can cause discomfort and may not offer sufficient ankle support, which can lead to injuries. Replace the worn-out insoles with footbeds that fully support your feet. There are different types of footbeds, depending on your needs, available in your MISTER MINIT shop.
- Replace loose or broken eyes and hooks, so that your laces can be tied correctly.
- If you are losing grip on slippery mountain rocks or steep trails or your soles are coming off, consider replacing the soles.

4. Store your hiking boots after your trip
- Store your hiking boots in a dry and well ventilated place.
- If you don’t use your boots for a long period of time, you can use a shoe tree to preserve the shape of the boot.
- If your hiking boots are made of oiled leather, treat them with MISTER MINIT Grease before storing them for winter.
